US citizens visiting USA insurance questions and answers

01.  Diplomat America plan for US citizen in the US

Hi,

My daughter is US citizen and will be coming to the US to stay there for 9-10 months a year. She is a dual citizen where she is US citizen and NewZealand citizen.

I have a few questions on the INF plans and the Diplomat plan.

(a) Firstly, with the INF plans, it would seem from the plan documents that these are straight fee-for-service plans where she can go to any Doctor/hospital/pharmacist she likes with the corresponding deductibles and plan maximums prescribed. Is this correct? However, I also see on your website that INF has a PPO network, First Health, which has many providers within good distance of where my daughter will be going to College.

Does the INF Standard Plan enable her to use this network, which would obviously keep costs down, while giving her the option to go outside of the network if necessary (but unlikely)? Also, what is the coverage for prescriptions on the INF plan, it is not clear from the plan brochure.

(b) The Diplomat America plan, same questions, it seems there is a PPO network, PPO network that is available and also has lots of providers in her College’s area? Prescription coverage for Diplomat America or no?

Lastly, with both plans I notice they require a passport number upon application. As a dual citizen, do we enter her US or her New Zealand Passport information? Again, thanks for all your help.
Glenda

Glenda,

Here are the answers to your questions:

a) Yes, the INF plans have the PPO network like the First Health network and you can get covered under that PPO network with the INF plan. For the prescription coverage, it covers 80% of the network charges up to the overall policy maximum.

his means that if you have a claim expense for instance say $4000, then you can go to any provider who comes under the First health and after the deductible, 80% of the expense is covered by INF. If you selected $500 deductible, then after paying the deductible for the first time expense, out of the rest $3500, 80% will be paid by INF and 20% should be your payment.

This is the co insurance factor. This is for the comprehensive plans like the Elite and Traveler USA. If you happen to go to a provider who does not come in the network, then 60% of the claim expense will be covered by INF.

For the INF fixed plans, like the Premier and the Standard, the brochure will have the specific amount that is covered for the prescription medication.

b) Diplomat also have their PPO network, their PPO network information is here: Diplomat America PPO network.

You will have to call the number given in this pdf to find out more. Regarding the prescription medication, there is coverage for that. Please see here: Diplomat America Plan Summary.

For more details, call them at (800) 513-2981 or (513) 533-1330. As a dual citizen, US citizenship will be considered. You can enter the US passport number as she is US citizen.

05. Insurance for US citizens visiting the US

Hi,

I am a US citizen living and working in Egypt. My wife and new born daughter (who are German citizens) will be travelling with me for a month vacation to the US this summer. How can I get an insurance plan that covers all of us during our stay in the US?

Thank you,
Eric

Dear Eric,

Thank you for contacting us for your insurance needs. The Patriot insurance plan offered by IMG is specifically designed for short term visitors to USA and is a hugely popular choice among tourists to America. Recently, this company made changes to their plans which allow US citizens who reside abroad to purchase these plans for short trips back home to the US.

This company has another version of the policy which covers "acute onset of pre-existing conditions" for persons under 70 years of age. This is Patriot America Plus and in all the other ways this plan is like Patriot America.

Here is another plan that can be purchased by US citizens coming to the US:

INF Elite:
This is a comprehensive plan from INF and provides coverage for people up to the age of 99. This plan provides full pre existing condition coverage which is unique feature of this plan.

09. US student studying in USA with Diabetics

Hi,

I have a 19 year old son, who resides with me in Spain. DANIEL is American, so he does not need a visa. From August 2019 to July 2020 it is planned that I studied at Manhattan College in NY. The College requires us medical insurance coverage without exclusions, or lack of deadlines for pre-existing diseases for the entire school year (August-2019 / July 2020), because although Daniel is in very good health, is Diabetic from 14 years of age (Melitin type 1).

What would be the most appropriate plan for Daniel's circumstances?

Thanks,
Marta

Dear Marta,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your US visitor medical insurance needs!. Unfortunately we do not have anything that will fit what you are needing for your son while he is at Manhattan College. However, since he is a US citizen, he can apply for domestic coverage (so called, Obama Care plans) offered by private companies which you can compare from New York's insurance marketplace.

Ordinarily, you have to wait until what is called "open enrollment" periods (starting in November for plans to start the first of the year). However, his arrival into the US (whenever that will be) will constitute a "qualifying event" which will allow him to sign onto a plan mid-year. He will have a limited time in which to sign up, but domestic plans all have to meet the requirements you describe.

The other option is that the College may offer a plan for their students. This should meet all their requirements. Either of these options are not inexpensive, but they will be what he will need during his time at Manhattan College.

The visitor plans we offer (some of which can be purchased by US citizens for short term coverage while in the US will not cover pre-existing conditions and are only for sudden illness or accident (so there are many exclusions). Good luck with your preparations for what looks like a great opportunity for your son.Do let us know if you have further questions and we can help as bestwe can.

Hello,

I am interested in obtaining health insurance through your company. I am a US citizen, currently living in Australia until the 30th of November. I will be travelling to Africa (South Africa, primarily) aswell as Europe and the US from 1 December 2018 until around 15 July 2019. Could you please recommend the best policy for me?

My trip will be beginning from Australia. I have seen some providers require a trip to start domestically within the US and just want to be sure this wouldn't be the case. Could you kindly confirm?

Cheers,
Michael

11. Travel insurance for US citizens visiting the United States

Hi,

I would like to purchase Travel Medical Insurance for my father who is a US citizen, resides out of US but traveling to US for holiday. Your website states I can put US address but when I am filling the form online, It does not give me the option to add USA as the country.

Please advise,
Alpana Jogia

Dear Rosario,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your US visitor medical insurance needs!. Here are the links for the policy we spoke about over the phone: Here is the link on our website for the US citizens visiting the US.

Please scroll down to see the suitable plans and see the information for INF Advantage Plan. Here is the buy link for the INF Advantage Plan for your reference.

The Advantage Plan covers 80% of all eligible medical expenses. Advantage provides the highest amount of acute on-set pre-existing coverage on the market. This plan protects for any new sickness or accident

Other option for US citizens who want coverage for pre-exiting conditions is Patriot America Plus from International Medical Group. The Patriot America Plus plan is particularly good for persons under 70 years of age with pre-existing medical conditions that could become an unexpected emergency during their travels.

Patriot America Plus

This plan offers coverage up to the maximum of the plan for what is called "acute onset" of a pre-existing medical condition up to the maximum purchased for the plan. However, for persons over 70 or without such pre-existing medical conditions, the Patriot America Lite plan has a greater option of maximums with better pricing.

12. Insurance for US citizen visiting the US for short term

Hi,

My name is Muhaddisa Ali and I am a 16 year old US Citizen. I live in Pakistan and will be visiting the US from 22nd June to 14th August. I am going to be attending a 6-week summer Pre-College Program at Rhode Island School of Design.

Firstly, I don't fully understand how the Insurance Plans work. I would appreciate if you could brief me on that. I have questions like, How does a deductible work? Are there specific requirements for universities? What will be covered? etc.

Secondly, I would appreciate help in choosing a plan that works best for me and my needs.

Since I am budget oriented, I would like to be as conservative with my costs as possible for this short trip.

Thank you,
Muhaddisa

Dear Muhaddisa,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your US visitor medical insurance needs!. Given below are details of plans thatwill cover US citizens who reside outside of the US while they visit the US.

These plans define "home country" as where a person has a fixed residence, not necessarily their country of citizenship. So, as long as you intend to return to your country of residence, they will cover you.

Here is the plan that is available for US citizens coming to the US for short term. Universities sometimes ask for specific benefit coverage. That is something that you might want to check with your university.

Regarding how these policies work:

You can buy them online and you will receive a confirmation email with the ID card and policy details attached. You can use them for your future use.

The deductible is the initial amount that you will be paying in case you incur claim expense after which the company will pay the remaining expense.

There is a 20% co insurance amount that is applicable after the deductible amount for the first $5000 of the expense after which the insurance company will pay 100%.

The other option is Patriot America insurance from International Medical Group. The policy maximum range from $50,000 to $1 million. The traveler must have resided outside US continuously for the past 6 months and must have a current health plan in force.

13. Coverage for Maternity

Hello,

My fiance and I are traveling to the US for two week in January. I am a US citizen and he is a foreign national with a visitor visa. We are looking at travel insurance plans for the time we are in the States, but are having trouble because I am a US citizen traveling to the US.

We have also found out the we are expecting, which has also hindered finding appropriate travel coverage.

We have looked into your plan and understand the terms. It seems to be linked to the ACA, but not entirely PPACA approved. Despite being a US citizen, do I still qualify to for this travel insurance?

Thank you and we hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Joyce

Dear Joyce,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your US visitor medical insurance needs!. Here at American Visitor Insurance, we pride ourselves on getting you the best plan for your particular situation.

Unfortunately, none of the plans that will cover US citizens in the US have any coverage for maternity expenses. While the Atlas plan would cover only complications, it is not available for US citizens while in the US. You can, of course, purchase Atlas for your fiancee (you dont need to purchase the same plan), but obviously the maternity coverage is irrelevent in his case. Do let us know if we can assist you further. We are happy to assist you with your purchase or answer remaining questions you may have. We wish you safe and happy travels!
