I had a no-problem trip but Seven corners was easy to deal with in the securing of the travel insurance and dealing with a few issues prior to departure.

I have always gotten a quick response with a live person. I placed a claim, we will see it their payment to me is as good as their customer service is.

Good policy options and pricing. Like to purchase high coverage for medical without covering full cost of trips - like the options Seven Corners provides.

J1 Visa Insurance - Faq's

01.  Which medical insurance plan works well for J1 and J2 Visa holders?

We have many plans that satisfy J visa requirements that work for both J1 and J2 Visa holders. Some US health insurance plans require that the J1 Visa holder is the primary applicant for the J2 visa holder to be eligible. If the J2 visa holder alone needs coverage, then the Patriot Exchange plan offered by International Medical Group (IMG) is available. Please find the details of this plan here:

02.  Does the domestic plans cover J2 Visa holders?

While we cannot state whether or not they cover J2 Visa holders completely, they might not meet the specific J visa health insurance requirements as defined by the immigration authorities. The J2 visa eligibility and medical insurance coverage is dependent on the J1 exchange program.

03.  Can a visiting foreign scholar come to the United States on a visitor's visa?

Yes, a visiting scholar can come to the US on a B-1 "visitor for business" visa. Under Certain situations a person on a B-1 visa status is permitted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) regulations to be reimbursed for expenses, and, under the amended law, can also be paid an honorarium. Visiting scholars who are going to meet all of their own expenses can also come in B-1 status. Getting a B-1 visa does not require any formal immigration document from the University. To obtain a B-1 visa, a prospective scholar should have an invitation letter from the department with which the scholar will be affiliated, detailing the dates and activities of the contemplated visit, and indicating what if anything is to be provided in the way of reimbursements and honoraria.

04.  What can happen if I do not satisfy the J visa insurance requirement?

The Department of State views health insurance as very, very important! The regulations require that your J program sponsor should terminate your status in the U.S. as a J visa holder if you willfully fail to comply with the J visa insurance requirement.

05.  Can a J2 visa holder buy insurance?

Most health insurance policies available for foreign scholars requires that the J1 visa holder be the primary applicant on the insurance policy and only then can a J2 visa holder be insured as part of that plan. However the Patriot Exchange plan offered by International Medical Group (IMG) can be purchased by the J2 visa holder without needing the J1 visa holder on that plan, as long as the J1 scholar is insured by the institution sponsoring the J visa holder.

The Patriot Exchange insurance plan is very affordable and has many excellent benefits. One advantage of the policy is that if the insured has access to a health center, they only pay a $5 copay (instead of the usual $100 deductible). As a copay, this is payable at every visit, however, even many visits will be cheaper than a single $100 deductible. A disadvantage to this Patriot Exchange policy is that there is no maternity coverage and no coverage for pre-existing conditions. 06.  When should you purchase a J1 visa health insurance?

All J visa applicants need to show proof of J1 visa health insurance meeting the minimum requirements when you apply for a J1 visa. It is best to buy J visa health insurance on American Visitor Insurance before you start the visa application process.

07.  What are J1 visa health insurance exclusions?

For example, some plans may exclude pre-existing medical conditions, maternity care, mental health disorders, substance abuse, sports injuries, etc. You should compare the best J1 visa health insurance benefits on American Visitor Insurance and read the policy certificate carefully to understand what is excluded from your coverage.

08.  What are the Insurance options for J2 visa holders?

J2 visa holders are the dependents of J1 visa holders, such as spouses or children. They have to meet the same insurance requirements as J1 visa holders. They can either purchase a separate plan or join the same plan as their J1 sponsor. There are different types of insurance options for J2 visa holders, such as short-term plans, long-term plans, or comprehensive plans. You can compare and buy best J1 visa health insurance on American Visitor Insurance.

09.  What should I do if I need to file a claim for my J1 visa health insurance?

If you need to file a claim for your J1 visa health insurance, you should follow these steps:

  • Contact your insurance company as soon as possible and inform them about your situation.
  • Fill out the claim form and attach any supporting documents, such as receipts, bills, medical reports, etc.
  • Submit the claim form and documents to your insurance company by mail, fax, email, or online portal.
  • Wait for your claim to be processed and approved by your insurance company.

Patriot Exchange insurance ideal for J1 visa holders

Patriot Exchange insurance offered by International Medical Group (IMG) is an excellent health insurance plan supporting J1 & J2 visa. It is ideal because Patriot Exchange can be purchased by the J2 dependent even if the J1 scholar is not part of the Patriot exchange plan, as long as he or she is covered by another plan offered by the research or educational institution.

J-1 visa evacuation and repatriation health insurance requirements

The US Department of State has established the following insurance requirements to maintain the J1 Visa or J2 Visa status:

  1. J1 Scholar (Exchange Scholar) Health Insurance policy must provide "medical benefits of at least $100,000 for each accident or illness."
  2. If a J visa holder dies in the U.S., then the policy must provide at least $25,000 in medical evacuation and repatriation insurance benefits to send the remains to the home country for burial.
  3. The J-1 exchange visitor health insurance deductible should not exceed $500 per accident or illness.
  4. The co-payment of medical expenses (the portion not covered by insurance that the insured pays him or herself) should be of no more than 25%.
  5. If, because of a serious illness or injury, you must be sent home on the advice of a doctor, the policy must pay up to $50,000 for the expenses of your travel.
  6. J1 Scholar (Exchange Scholar) Health Insurance policy may establish a waiting period before it covers pre-existing conditions (that is, health problems you had before you bought the insurance), as long as the waiting period is reasonable by current standards in the insurance business.
  7. If you elect to satisfy the insurance requirement through a policy issued in your home country, the policy must be backed by the full faith and credit of your government. Otherwise, the company providing the insurance must meet minimum rating requirements established by Department of State (an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or better, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-1" or better, a Standard & Poor's Claims-Paying Ability rating of "A-" or better, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or better).
  8. These J1 visa health insurance plan requirements apply to both J-1 visa students and J-1 visa exchange scholars and to their J-2 dependent visa spouse and J2 visa children.

Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Insurance satisfies J visa requrements

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance requires the student insurance plan to include Medical evacuation coverage. The J1 Visa requirements include minimum coverage for Medical Evacuation of $50,000 and Repatriation of Remains of $25,000. Most university insurance do not provide this medical evacuation coverage, and students do not realize that they are not meeting the J1 Visa requirements. The Medical Evacuation & Repatriation Insurance and Atlas MedEvac Insurance offers coverage for medical evacuation of $50,000 and satisfies the J visa requirements.
