Maternity Insurance Forum

Hi,
Good afternoon, i am currently a UK citizen married to a US citizen, we are currently going through the process of visas trying to move me over permanently with a green card. If i was to get pregnant soon after i move is there insurance i can get to cover me with American healthcare?
Thanks,
Kim

Dear Kim,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs! I don't know how long they make you wait for the green card and social security number (SSN). Once you have a social security number, you should be able to purchase a domestic policy which will cover you fully (albeit cost a bundle); that would be the best option for your maternity wellness and delivery coverage. Alternatively, you can be placed on your husband's policy if he has one through an employer (I don't know if they make you wait for a SSN as well -- although in a perfect world they should not). They sometimes make the employee (and consequently their families) wait for health insurance coverage, so you can check with the employer. Or if YOU have an employer you can also get their plan (if they can hire you, it seems to me they can offer you insurance).

MEANWHILE, if they make you wait or you need some interim coverage, we do offer that. However, you should know that the maternity coverage is extremely limited if this is of main concern. The best option for the situation you describe is a plan called Atlas America. It offers coverage for "complications" of pregnancy in the first 26 weeks of gestation. So, it is coverage you hope you do not need, but it does give you something of a buffer, just in case. What that means is, if you do get pregnant under that policy, all your wellness OB visits you will have to pay for out of pocket until you can get onto a domestic plan.

To purchase the Atlas America plan, you can go directly to this site: Buy Atlas America Plan
If you'd like to look over details of this plan, use this link (PPO, claims, brochure): Plan details
Atlas America Logo      Plan Details      Buy Now      Brochure

I hope I have given you enough information. We do not sell domestic insurance plans, but these are available online through each state's "insurance marketplace". The process is a bit confusing, but you can call the information number given on the website as well as contact the state's health department. Each state determines their own laws regarding insurance, and so they are all a bit different.

Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

Hi,
My wife (age 31), my daughter (age 2) and I (age 33), all from Sydney, Australia are travelling to Hawaii for a 10 day trip in March-April.
My wife is pregnant, and the trip will be completed before she reaches 26 weeks. We conceived via IVF, and booked out trip before we found out we were pregnant.
What we are looking for is some sort of insurance policy that would cover care of a new born child my wife had to give birth while on our trip.
We are happy to pay a high premium and just wanted to know if there was any sort of policy like this for purchase.
Thanks,
Chris

Dear Chris,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs!
Unfortunately we do not have plans that cover the child birth for an existing pregnancy.
But we have a plan that provides coverage for any pregnancy complications only for up to first 26 weeks of pregnancy. The plan information is below:

Hi,
I have a friend that is a Chinese citizen that wishes to travel and stay with me for a period of time in the US. Her and her husband are trying to get pregnant now and she could potentially end up having the baby in the US. What is the best plan for her to purchase. She is in her early 30's and it's a while before her trip so if there's a waiting period to cover the delivery that's okay. I just want a reasonable deductible and enough coverage in case she does have the baby here in US either way she gives birth and if there's complications.
Thanks,
Christopher

Dear Christopher,
Thank you for your inquiry to American Visitor Insurance. We offer insurance from various highly rated insurance companies which allows you to compare prices and options to find the policy that meets your needs and budget.
If you are considering becoming pregnant and want to be sure you have insurance that will cover it, there are options available.

1. INBOUND IMMIGRANT:
The shortest waiting period (also 3 months) is for this policy which is only a fixed policy and offers $2,800 per pregnancy only. To purchase this policy, go to: Inbound Immigrant

GLOBAL PLANS with excellent coverage for pregnancy:
The best options for those not yet pregnant are global health insurance options. These provide major medical coverage but they have a 10 month (for partial coverage) or 12 month waiting period. You can find quotes for global health insurance here: Global plans

1. GLOBAL MEDICAL PLATINUM from IMG:
The best global option for maternity coverage is Global Medical Platinum which covers maternity after 10 months continuous coverage of the plan. There is a pregnancy deductible of $2500 applicable on this plan.

For the brochure of the Global Medical Platinum, please click on the below link and look under the Platinum column for details:

2. RESIDE WORLDWIDE from Seven Corners:
Another option that has recently added a maternity benefit is the Reside Worldwide plan which also has a 12 month wait period and only covers $4,000 for normal delivery, but has no additional cost for the maternity coverage.

Hi,
I am a permanent resident in the US. I am 3 months pregnant and traveling to Canada for 11 days. I am looking at what the cost of travel insurance would be. I am traveling with my husband who is also 33 years old and my 1 year old and two year old children. We will be staying in Ontario.
Thanks,
Jenilea

Dear Jenilea,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance! Since health insurance is for the unexpected, no policy will cover the delivery and wellness visits of a current pregnancy. However, we have one option that covers "complications of pregnancy" in the first 26 weeks of gestation.
Clearly, this is insurance that we hope you would not need, but should there be some problem or a premature birth event, you would be covered.
Furthermore, the policy has many excellent benefits and will take care of you in case of any sudden illness or accident. The plan is called Atlas America and can be purchased on line for guaranteed coverage. It also covers "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. Children under 10 years of age are "free" with a paying adult on the policy.
Here is our weblink with all the information on the plan:

Atlas America Logo      Plan Details      Buy Now      Brochure

Immediately after your purchase, you will get a confirmation email with an ID card that you can print out and should carry with you since it has all the information needed to access your insurance should you need to.

Another option is the Safe Travels USA which offers up to $1000 for complications of pregnancy. Here are links for those policies:

Hi,
My wife is traveling from Canada to California for one week. She is currently pregnant and will be in the 25th week of her pregnancy while visiting California. She is fully insured in Canada and wants to travel back to Canada for the delivery, however i want to know if there is any insurance that will insure the baby should there be a premature delivery while she is in the US. My wife is insured by her Canadian insurance even while in the US, the coverage request is really for the unborn baby, should the baby be born in the US?
Please can you get back as soon as possible.
Thanks,
George

Hi,
The medical coverage for the baby would not be covered.
We do not cover children until they are 14 days old and not after that 14 days as the pre-mature delivery would be a pre-existing condition.

Hi,
I am looking for insurance to cover the potential worse case scenarios after having a c section. I do not want insurance to cover the c-section or hospital costs associated with a normal c section I am looking for insurance to cover any unexpected incidence ie baby needing neonatal care or for me post op complications. I do not mind taking out a 12 month policy.
Thanks,
Amy

Dear Amy,
Unfortunately, if the c-section is not covered, then the complications arising from it with also not be covered. The baby, if born in the US, can purchase a domestic policy (ha, well, you can for him/her) and you should set this up in advance of the birth. To do that you can check your state's insurance marketplace and compare prices and choose one.
You can go here to get minor coverage of maternity : Compare Safe Travels Plans
(Just ignore the last column; the rest cover complications of pregnancy up to $1000)

Hi,
I am intersted in purchasing the Patriot Platinum cover for an upcoming stay in the US (Sept 30th - Dec 22nd). I am a UK citizen, aged 35.
I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and I understand that this plan will not cover me for any pregnancy/birth related care. That’s fine. I’m looking for cover for other medical/health unforeseen emergencies during my stay. Can you confirm that being pregnant, would not exclude me form this cover.
Many thanks,
Gemma

Dear Gemma,
Thank you for your email inquiry. The Patriot Platinum is an excellent plan. It is the top of the line plan for IMG. You are correct that it has no coverage at all for maternity, not even an emergency of that condition. Being pregnant will NOT negate your coverage with the plan. I will put links for that plan below.

For all the information on the Patriot Platinum plan: Patriot Platinum Plan Details

There is a plan called Atlas America which, although it does not cover maternity either, it does cover "complications" of pregnancy in the first 26 weeks of gestation. So, this is coverage you hope you do not need, BUT, should there be some emergency and you are early in the pregnancy, it WOULD offer coverage. It is the only plan which has this type of coverage, so I point it out to you so you can make a comparison and see if it is right for you.

Dear Sir,
My wife and I are South African citizens. We have been living and working in China for the past year. The company that I work for (a German group with an operation in the US) has indicated that I may be sent to the US operation in LeRoy, NY, later this year.
My wife and I are planning on falling pregnant before we will potentially arrive in the US. Please can you advise regarding the options we have regarding medical insurance. Is it possible for us to take up cover before arriving in the US so that the cover waiting period has been served before my wife is pregnant? We of course understand that we will not be able to claim any expenses whilst outside of the US.
Thank you,
Best Regards
Isaac

Dear Isaac,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs! The plan I recommend for you and your wife is the Global Medical Platinum offered by IMG. This plan covers maternity up to $50,000 with an additional deductible of $2,500. Maternity is covered only after 10 months of continuous coverage.
You are required to buy this plan for 1 year pf coverage payable monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. This plan is renewable for continuous coverage.

Hello,
I am a visitor to the US. I am now pregnant and wondering if I can get maternity insurance here. The baby's father has green card but I do not know if that changes anything about my insurance policy. It would be great if I can get some information on what kind of insurance is available for me.
Thank you,

Dear Chloe,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs!
There are no insurance policies that will cover an existing pregnancy. Since your husband is a Green Card holder you could be eligible to domestic insurance plans if he is already having one. You could still buy our plans for any unexpected sickness and injury but they will not cover pregnancy and maternity.

Hello,
I am an American citizen and I am currently residing in China. I'm planning on travelling to the US to visit family around next February/March. My husband and I are currently trying for a baby, so I may be pregnant during our visit. I understand that Atlas Travel would cover me in this situation (i.e. I would be less than 26 weeks pregnant, and it looks like it covers US citizens travelling outside of their home country - China in my case). Is this correct?
Regards,
Layla

Dear Layla,
Thank you for contacting American Visitor Insurance for your travel insurance needs. The Atlas America plan by HCC is only for non USA citizen visiting the US. And the coverage for pregnancy is only for the "complications of pregnancy".
If you are interested with plans that will cover you for new illness and emergency, then below are details of plans that will cover US citizens who reside outside of the US while they visit the US. These plans define "home country" as where a person has a fixed residence, not necessarily their country of citizenship. So, as long as you intend to return to your country of residence, they will cover you. The two policies are offered by the same company, but have different underwriters and vary in the maximum they will allow.
Liaison Majestic (maximums available: $60,000 $125,000 $600,000 and $1 million;)

  • What sort of documentation will be required?
  • I've gone through your website & came to know about two plans on visitors visa: Inbound Immigrant Insurance and Atlas America Insurance
  • Will you explain us about the benefits of these insurance & which would be the perfect time we can take out the same.
Awaiting for your positive feedback.
Thank you,

Dear Harsh,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs!
If the insurance plan has not become effective before the woman conceives, then there is no plan that will cover pregnancy as it will be treated as a pre existing condition. Atlas America plan from HCCMIS is an exception. However, this plan only covers pregnancy complications up to 26 weeks of pregnancy but not the routine check up involved with pregnancy. If the person is not pregnant and is considering to buy insurance before getting pregnant, then please check out this below link to find several available options: Maternity Insurance Plans

The best options for those not yet pregnant are the global health insurance plans. These plans provide maternity coverage but have a 10 month waiting period.
You can find quotes for global health insurance here: Global Insurance
The best option for maternity coverage is Global Medical Platinum which covers maternity as follows:
$2,500 deductible per pregnancy.
$50,000 lifetime maximum.
$200 newborn wellness benefit for the first 12 months after birth.
Newborn care & congenital disorders maximum of $250,000 for the first 31 days after birth.

Another option that has recently added a maternity benefit is the Reside Worldwide plan which also has a 12 month wait period and only covers $4,000 for normal delivery, but has no additional cost for the maternity coverage.

The Inbound Immigrant by Seven Corners is a "fixed" plan that offers ONLY $2,800 for maternity and only when conception occurs at least 90 days after the effective date.

questionHi,
I am an American but currently live in Taiwan and will travel home for one month from June7-July 9. I recently found out I'm pregnant and need coverage for this month esp if I need to visit the doctor while I'm home. I need it to be covered under a copay rather than a large deductible. Do you offer this?
Thanks,
Amanda

Dear Amanda,
Congratulations on your baby! Unfortunately, temporary policies that we offer do NOT cover wellness visits such as you might need while in the US. Furthermore, since you are a US citizen, the options for the travel insurance we sell is very limited. You are only eligible to purchase Liaison Continent or Liaison Majestic policies (you must list Taiwan as your home country although you will say you are a US citizen on the application). I will put links below for them.
As a US citizen, you are eligible for domestic plans. These vary widely in accessibility and form from state to state. All states are supposed to have insurance comparison websites where you can look at rates and coverage available (for some you have to use a general government site). These will likely have to be purchased for whole months only and I'm not sure if you can sign up for only one month, but you will have to check your states' information. The good news is that these policies will have to cover your pre-existing condition. The bad news is that they can be quite expensive. Still, I would caution you against traveling without any insurance and coverage which includes your pregnancy would be best (even though I cannot sell you that one).
The Liaison Majestic policy is available with $60k, $125k, $600k and $1 million maximum with deductibles from $0 to $2500:

Dear Customer,
Thank you for your inquiry to American Visitor Insurance. We offer insurance from various highly rated insurance companies which allows you to compare prices and options to find the policy that meets your needs and budget.
The only policy that covers a pregnancy already started is Atlas America. However, as a green card holder, you are not eligible for that plan. You're best bet is to find an OB0GYN that will take you as a patient, explain you do not have insurance and see how much they will charge you. You can shop around and get the best deal.
Aside from that, some churches and other associations may help people with maternity costs. Congratulations and good luck! Do let us know if there is anything we can help you with. For a full article with details about maternity coverage, please visit: Maternity pregnancy insurance

There is no insurance you can purchase to cover the delivery of a current pregnancy (high risk or not). The best you can get is a policy called Atlas America which only covers "complications of pregnancy" in the first 26 weeks of gestation. So, this excludes delivery and, of course, it is coverage you hope you will not need. Here is the link for that policy in case you are interested: Atlas America Insurance
Best course is probably to deliver in Canada where, I assume, you will have full coverage. If you are a US citizen there may be options available, but many plans also have waiting periods for coverage of pre-existing conditions.

Good luck, congratulations and we wish you all the best!

questionHello,
My name is Gorka Erice, together with my wife I have an Patriot America® which will expire next April 1st. Before considering the renewal I would like to include Maternity to my insurance. Could it be possible? If not could you suggest me an insurance with this coverage?
Thank you
Dr Gorka Erice

Dear Gorka,
Your current insurance plan, Patriot America does not have coverage for pregnancy.
The best options for those not yet pregnant are global health insurance options.
These provide major medical coverage but they have a 10 month (for partial coverage) or 12 month waiting period. You can find quotes for global health insurance here: Global travel compare

The best option for maternity coverage is Global Medical Platinum which covers maternity as follows: $2,500 deductible per pregnancy.
$50,000 lifetime maximum.
$200 newborn wellness benefit for the first 12 months after birth.
Newborn care & congenital disorders maximum of $250,000 for the first 31 days after birth.

Congratulations and good luck! Do let us know if there is anything we can help you with. For a full article with details about maternity coverage, please visit: maternity pregnancy insurance

questionHello,
You had mentioned that "If you are not a student, the shortest waiting period (also 3 months) is for this policy which is only a fixed policy and offers $2,800 per pregnancy only. To purchase this policy, go to: Inbound Immigrant Insurance"
Do you only cover $2,800 for pregnancy?! Because I am pretty sure that it might cost more than $10,000 per pregnancy!
Also, in the eligibility, you have mentioned that - Policy must become effective within 24 months of arrival in USA?! What does that mean?
Thanks,
Amiti

Dear Amiti,
You are correct. Regardless of what you are charged for the delivery, the policy will only cover $2800 of it. You would have to pay the difference.
"Policy must become effective within 24 months of arrival in USA?" This means that you need to purchase Inbound Immigrant insurance plan before 24 months after you arrive in USA.

questionHello,
You had mentioned that "The best option for maternity coverage is Global Medical Platinum because it covers 50% of maternity cost?" Could you please explain?
Thanks,
Ramya

Dear Ramya,
The Global Medical Platinum Plan covers 50% of maternity expenses up to $100,000 (then 100%). Most others have a set amount of about $5,000 or $7,500 that they pay.

questionHello,
How can I be ensure that these insurance policies are not scams? Is there a list I can I make sure of at a government agency?
Thank You!
Kavya

Dear Kavya,
There is no policy that will pay for an existing pregnancy. Travel medical insurance works on the premise of an unanticipated event, and cannot pay for an event that is certain to happen. Some insurance do provide cover for maternity but after a certain waiting period of having the insurance coverage.

questionDear Sir/ Madam,
My name is Muhammad Zubair Ahmad. I am 36 years old male. My Wife name is Durre Sadaf. She is 43 years old. We both are Consultant Dentist and working as senior faculty members at Dental college, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. We have excellent salaries. We are Pakistani nationals. We have a 2 years old baby. All 3 of us are perfectly normal and healthy and never diagnosed with any illness or disease. Reason for contacting you is that we need a good comprehensive insurance plan which include USA also that can cover various travel and health benefits including maternity benefits. Please note that my wife is not pregnant right now. We travel a lot (almost every 3 to 4 months) and each time we travel we purchase a short term travel insurance from local companies in Saudi Arabia. We are coming to US on B1 and B2 visas. A friend of mine has told me that your company can provide a good insurance plan for the whole family. Unfortunately I could not find any of your offices in Saudi Arabia. Kindly suggest any other possibility if you don't offer Insurance to people living in middle east.
Your reply will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
