02. Patriot Platinum plan with covid coverage in the US

Hi,

I have a Patriot platinum travel insurance policy for my trip back to the USA on 11/26. It was purchased on 10/23/20. I have read conflicting info re whether covid is covered- one document sent to me said if USA is in alert level 4, it is not covered but then your website says that it is. I want to be sure about the coverage before I go to the USA.

Thank you,
Cara Hafner

Dear Cara,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance with your inquiry!

The Patriot Platinum America insurance covers Covid in the US for the people visiting the US. For coverage outside of the US, the plan does not cover the Covid testing and related treatment. The request for testing should be from a doctor or medical practitioner to get the coverage. It will not be covered if it is requested by any country/airline.

03. Coverage for Covid with the Safe Travels plan

Hi,

I am traveling to Vegas for one week and I am interested in the Covid coverage, and at the disclaimer: it says that if you are at the incubation period etc. so how do you decide about the incubation period?

Thank you,
Edna

Dear Edna,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance with your inquiry!

The best thing you can do is document (write down) on a calendar for two weeks prior to your departure where you are, where you go, if you wear a mask, etc. If you can show that the most likely place you were infected was the airport or airplane after the start of your policy, then the illness should be covered (especially if there is no or low infection rate at your country of origin). Something in writing will be good to have just in case. This is the best anyone can do.

If you are ill before your plan starts, then the company will NOT cover it, so the more evidence you have to show that, the better you will be in the event you do get ill within the first 14 days of arrival.

I hope that helps answer your question.

07. Atlas plan and Patriot America plus plan for visitor to Washington state

Hi,

I am interested in buying the Atlas plan for my wife and child . But I wonder if I can give the mailing address of Washington.

On the other hand, the Patriot America Plus plan has a very high co pay of $250. Can you please clarify?

Thank you,
Rajesh

Dear Swathi and Rajesh,

You will not be able to buy Atlas plan if you give the mailing address of Washington. If you can give another mailing address, then you can buy the plan.On the other hand, here are the details of Patriot America Plus plan which is equally good as Atlas. This plan does not have co pay as we talked over the phone.

Only $25 copay is applicable for urgent care and if the $0 deductible is selected then you do not have to pay this co pay as well.

Walk in clinic there is a $15 co pay which is reasonable.

08. Visitors Insurance for foreign traveler already in USA

Hi,

Can I buy visitors traveler insurance for the person who has already arrived to USA ?

Thank you,
Zack

Dear Zack,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Yes! You can purchase a policy for someone already in the US. Of course, we suggest you purchase from the day they leave until the day they return home to be fully covered for any medical situation that should arise on their trip. If you purchase it later, of course, it will only cover future medical conditions. If your traveler is already sick, this illness will not be covered by the insurance you purchase.

Hopefully this is not the situation. The form when you make your purchase may be slightly awkward since it assumes the visitor has not left their home country. If the form does not allow you to put a past date for "date of departure" from home country, use tomorrow as the soonest date.

The soonest you can start a policy is tomorrow. Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

12. Short term travel insurance option to include Parkinson's disease coverage

Hello,

I am a US citizen living in Canada for 7 months. You had mentioned Geo Blue and IMG. However I have Parkinson's disease and need insurance to cover that. Do they cover that. Also, I have a question regarding renewal of the plan. If I buy insurance for some time and then need to renew, is there a new deductible amount that I need to meet?

Thank you,
Ben

Dear Ben,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Here are the details about what we spoke about over the phone: I am sorry, I do not have good news as far as coverage for Parkinson’s disease. Neither GeoBlue or International Medical Group will provide coverage for Parkinson’s disease. I also asked them that if you were eligible to any coverage which was not related to your condition but the answer was the same, that they would not cover it.

We are sorry for not being able to provide a better response.

To answer your question regarding the deductible while renewing the plan, IMG responded by saying it was one time deductible and is not considered again while renewing.

14. Factors that determine the insurance cost

Hello,

I’m visiting the US for 6 months, I want to buy visitor medical insurance, please can you help me in getting quotes for insurance plans and how much it would cost?

Thanks,
Kim

Dear Kim,

Before you get quotes for the insurance plans, there are some important aspects of insurance that determine the coverage and cost of an insurance plan which are as follows:

  • Visitor insurance is broadly classified as Fixed and Comprehensive plans.Fixed benefit or Scheduled benefits offer limited coverage and have specific benefit limits on medical expenses. These plans are cheaper compared to comprehensive plans which do not have specific limits and cover expenses up to the plan maximum. Review the differences between fixed and comprehensive plans to know more.
  • The next factor is the plan maximum, this is maximum coverage that a plan will offer to pay your medical expenses. Higher the plan maximum, higher will be the premium.
  • Deductible is amount you need to pay first before the plan starts to pay. Higher the deductible, lesser the premium.
  • Coinsurance is the percentage of amount the plan will pay after the deductible and the remaining you will have to pay. Only a few plans give you the options to choose the coinsurance.
  • Your age, travel dates will also affect the premium of the plan. Older travellers have to pay more and the coverage may be limited.
  • Some other important factors like special coverage for pre-existing ailments, maternity, adventure sports… also affect the price of the insurance.
  • If you need extra coverage you may have to pay more. For some plans these extra benefits are optional and may be expensive than the ones that do not offer these benefits.

You can review more factors that determine the cost of an insurance plan here: Factors to consider

25. Travel health insurance for a Canadian visiting the USA

Dear customer support,

I am a Canadian national traveling to the US. When trying to complete the application I am unable to use my Canadian address.

  • Why am I unable to use my Canada address while filling the form, what is the reason for this limitation?
  • Is this policy direct billing or is it reimbursement. The brochure seems to indicate that it is reimbursement, please clarify.
  • What are the alternate policies for our needs?
Thank you,
Shirley

Dear Shirley,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Here are the answers to your questions:

  • Issue with Canadian address while filling out the application form:
On the first page of the application form you were asked what state in the US to which you were traveling. They want THAT address in the next part of the application and that is why Canada does not appear on that list (they know you are traveling from there, not TO there). You will be able to put in your Canadian citizenship and a Canadian billing address as needed further along in the application form.
  • Reimbursement question:
The reimbursement depends on the provider you use. If they are willing to make the phone call to the insurance company, you will be able to get direct billing and only pay your deductible and your portion to the provider and the insurance company will pay their part directly to the provider. However, if they are not willing to make the call, then you may have to pay the bill in its entirety and submit a claim for reimbursement from the company. It usually takes 10-15 business days to get a reimbursement check from them. The claims form is relatively painless and available for download on our site. It is something anyone can fill out (don't have to be a doctor with special codes or anything).
  • Alternate policies:
You can use any of the policies which come up on our search engine. Be aware that the inbound policies are fixed policies and may not cover 100% of any medical bills. Comprehensive plans offer more complete coverage, but will be more expensive. If you can dovetail this insurance with a Canadian plan, then I would feel better about going with a fixed plan.
You can use this link: Older Traveler Plans
Play around with the maximum of the plan to get different options and be sure you enter the time you wish to be covered for since some plans are only available for a few months time.

34. Diplomat America for non US residents visiting US

Hi,

I just purchased the Global Underwriters policy from your site, after inputting that I am a US Citizen but non-resident, visiting the USA for 16 days. But once I downloaded the policy it states eligibility is " benefits to Non-US citizens while traveling outside their Home Country to the United States. " - ??? I bought this from your site because I found it on their site but found their wording unclear, but now maybe I have the wrong policy. Please advise!.

Karla

Dear Karla,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Please note that the Diplomat America plan CAN be used by US citizens for short term travel to the US if they intend to return to their foreign address afterward.

So this is correct on the site although it is not fully obvious given the application form. They have updated their online forms .If you were able to purchase using "US citizen" then there's no problem. If you put some other nationality, then we will have to inform the company so that it is all correct on your application.

Hope this is helpful!

35. Insurance coverage for outpatient services

Hi,

Say I have a policy of 100,000 $ coverage. I would like to know will the plan will cover the following medical expenses (occurred without admitting to the hospital):

1. Doctor visit.
2. Lab test/diagnosis.
and what is the maximum limit for different types of expenses?
Thanks
Suman

Dear Suman,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. The policy you have chosen, Atlas America, covers expenses for any sudden illness or accident. Covered expenses would include doctor visits and any lab tests prescribed or asked for by the doctor. The policy also covers "acute onset of pre-existing condition" up to the maximum of the plan, so any emergency due to a pre-existing condition for a person under 70 years old, would also be covered either in hospital or doctor visit. The maximum amount that the company will pay for medical expenses is the maximum of the plan (in your case $100,000). Medical expenses include hospital stay, doctor visit, medication, diagnostic tests, etc. And all medical expenses are subject to the one-time deductible and co-insurance amounts. There are a few other "pots" of money in your policy, specifically, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, and an accidental death/dismemberment benefit. These are in addition to the maximum although they cover only specific costs and situations.

Hopefully, this is purely academic and you enjoy a safe and healthy trip!

41. Clarification of Maximum Coverage

Hello,

I need some clarifications regarding your suggestions.

  1. Is the maximum coverage amount mentioned in the application to each individual on the plan separately?
  2. When u recommend Patriot Platinum daily premium rate is $14.87 compared with a fixed plan, what is the superiority of the Platinum plan to justify such a high premium?
  3. As I mentioned we want maximum available protection in the event of major sickness leading to hospitalization.
Thanks
Narendra

Dear Narendra,

1. Is the maximum coverage amount mentioned in the application to each individual on the plan separately?
Answer: Yes, each of you will have a policy maximum of 100,000 when you buy a combined policy. You may choose to buy a separate policy if you want to which will have two policy documents with separate policy numbers, but the coverage is identical if both of you are covered by one policy or two.

2. When u recommend Patriot Platinum daily premium rate is $14.87 compared with a fixed plan, what is the superiority of Platinum plan to justify such a high premium?
Answer: Patriot Platinum by International Medical Group (IMG) is a "comprehensive" plan, therefore the cost is higher than that of the Seven Corners plan which is a "fixed" or ‘Scheduled benefits” plan.
Since Patriot Platinum is a "comprehensive" plan, it has better coverage in terms of medical coverage. To learn more about the difference between "fixed" and "comprehensive, please find this link: Fixed vs Comprehensive Coverage.

As I mentioned we want maximum available protection in the event of major sickness leading to hospitalization.
Answer: If you are looking for better protection, then Patriot Platinum is the best option. It is a comprehensive plan and has the highest policy maximum available.

We hope you find this information useful.

Dear Sir/Madam

My wife (DoB 28 April 1953) and myself (DoB 11 March 1947) are planning to purchase a plan from below link for our visit to USA covering 3 July 2013 to 9 October 2013 travel medical insurance policy. From your web site, I understand that the cost for a policy of $100,000/- is $1273/- for the two of us. (In comparison, a policy of $100,000/- will cost $668/- if purchased only for myself). I would appreciate it very much if you can clarify whether the above policy costing $1273/- for the two of us will cover $100,000/- *per person* and *not* $100,000/- *together **for both of us*.
Arvind

Dear Arvind,

The policy maximum amount applies to each of the individual separately. So, if the policy maximum is $100,000 then it $100,000 for you and $100,000 for your wife. The premium or the price listed in the quote is the total for all the individuals on the policy.

Hope this helps!

46. Clarification in Travel Medical Insurance coverage for Medications

Hi,

Does your travel medical insurance cover medications?
Ann

Dear Ann,

You would be covered for any medications prescribed for a covered illness, as you would any doctor visit, medical procedure, tests, etc. However, if you take medication regularly for some condition, these would not be covered. Travelers should carry enough medication to get through their trip (with extras just in case), if possible and be aware that prescriptions may not be accepted in the country they are visiting. Over the counter medications are not covered. Visitors may be able to take advantage of prescription savings at places like Walmart that offers many prescriptions for only $4 per month (they will need valid prescriptions, however).

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I am a dual citizen with passports from Sweden and Israel. I’m planning a trip to the US for 15 days and then I will go to Israel for 10 days before returning to Sweden where I live and work. I have purchased the Patriot America plan. Will it cover me while in Israel or will I have to buy something else?

Issac

Dear Isaac,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. The issue of dual citizens is a complicated one. The policies we sell generally are for travel outside your “home country” only. Most companies define your “home country” as where you principally reside and where you have citizenship. However, you are in luck because the Patriot America plan offers a “return to home country” coverage which, for an additional about 5% to the premium price, would cover you for your entire trip from the USA and in Israel.

Happy travels!

Hi,

I am a US citizen, but I live in France. I am planning a visit for 3 weeks to the US. Do you have a plan that will cover me?

Jenny

Dear Jenny,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Most plans will NOT cover US citizens in the US. However, there are two plans which only consider where you live to be your "home country". You will be asked your citizenship and it will be a part of your application. However, so long as you reside outside the US and put this address down as your "home country" address and you intend to return to that foreign address, these plans will cover you.

49. Clarification regarding "leaving from" and "returning to" home country

Hi there,

I am booking medical insurance through your site. i have found an insurance policy which suits me needs.
I am a UK citizen , and i will be visiting the USA from June 7th to Oct 1st. Although a UK citizen, i will be arriving from and returning to Indonesia, after my time in the USA, ie not leaving from and returning to the UK. I have booked travel insurance a couple times with you before and i was told this does not matter, however as i am filling in the online form for the insurance policy, it does not give me an option to change the 'leaving from' and 'returning to' box, giving only the option of 'leaving from' and 'returning to' home country.

Does this matter?

Will it affect my coverage?

Hi there,

This will not impact your coverage in any way. You should enter the dates that you are in the USA (June 7th to Oct 1st).

50. Travel Health Insurance plans for visiting California

Hi,

I am in California and I am trying to buy an Atlas Travel Insurance policy. However, I get a warning message just before my purchase which says something like the insurance is not valid in California. Can I buy and use this insurance if my visitor is coming to visit me in California?

Hi,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. The Atlas insurance is good for anyone who is not a US citizen while visiting any state in the USA. This message (there for legal reasons) states (in legalese) that the State of California will not pick up any bills if the insurance company were to go bankrupt. This is an unlikely event and, anyway, the company is underwritten by Lloyds of London who has promised to pay out claims if that should happen. Don’t let that legal notice worry you, you have chosen a very good plan for your visitor(s)!

53. Health Insurance for 3-year-old daugther from Spain visiting USA with dual citizenship

Hi,

My wife and I are interested in purchasing health insurance for our 3-year-old daughter to cover her during our upcoming visit to the United States. I notice that the policies limit eligibility to non-US citizens, no matter the covered individual's Home Country. In this case, our daughter has both US and Spanish citizenship; her home country is Spain. Would she be eligible for coverage? And to be clear, my wife and I would not be purchasing coverage for ourselves, only for our daughter.

Thank you,
Richard Browning

Dear Richard,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. Your daughter is eligible to purchase any of our visitor insurance. When it is time to purchase the policy put your address in Spain as her "Home Country"
