Canada is among the more popular tourist destinations, especially for visitors from the US, the UK, and other European countries. Beyond tourism, people travel to Canada for work, for education as well as to visit friends and family. Given this range of visitors, some stay for a few days while others stay for few months.
Recent statistics indicate that the percentage of international tourists to Canada has increased, which includes a 20% increase in visitors from Australia, 15% increase in German visitors, and a 12% increase in visitors from Mexico.
An increase in visitors to Canada has raised some valid concerns about healthcare of the visitors while in the country. While many countries including the 26 Schengen countries and countries like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Cuba, Russia...have mandated the requirement of travel health insurance, Canada requires health insurance only for a Super Visa and not for a visitor visa.
In general, travel health insurance is a very important requirement while traveling outside your home country. This is particularly important where healthcare is expensive to relieve the travellers from paying for outstanding medical cost which might result from an unexpected sickness or injury. Recent tragic incidents like the crash on highway 401 south of Ottawa make this point evident to all tourists and highlights the need for health insurance during international travel.
It may seen paradoxical to buy travel insurance for visiting Canada from a website called American Visitor Insurance, however here you find excellent international travel insurance plans which cover travellers outside their home country and work very well in Canada.
These travel health insurance plans typically do not include preventive care and routine doctor visits, prescription medications for pre-existing conditions. They do however cover unexpected sickness and injury fully.
These plans have great coverage for emergency medical evacuation, repatriation. These plans do cover acute onset of a pre-existing condition and recently most of plans have extended this benefit for people up to the age of 80. Some of these plans have great adventure sports coverage which is great for tourists who love sports and tour around to participate in their favorite sports activities.
Major cities in Canada are very cosmopolitan with residents from around the globe and from various different cultures. These international residents often want to bring their parents and other family members to visit Canada for a few months. Most of these visitors are older in age and have pre-existing conditions like Diabetes, Heart diseases... It is important for the insurance plans to provide coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions.
There are many US insurance companies have designed comprehensive travel insurance plans with excellent coverage for all the benefits mentioned above including coverage for acute onset of pre-existing condition. The following are some of the popular international travel insurance plans.
INF travel insurance offers visitors health insurance for visiting Canada. One of their plans (Elite) has excellent coverage of pre-existing medical conditions beyond the usual coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions which is a unique offering.
You can compare their plans using this link and purchase the one you are interested in by choosing the "buy now" button for the appropriate plan: Please note that the Elite plan insurance and Premier Insurance are cheaper per month if you purchase at least 90 days the first time you buy them. You can compare all available INF US visitor insurance.
"I recently visited your website for the first time to buy insurance for travel to US. I found the information very good. Your customer support was fantastic and awesome. You were so dedicated to take care of my inquiries. I would rate your service 100/100."
"Thank you for such helpful information. You've impressed me as I have contacted other companies and haven't gotten half of the information from them that you have sent me. I will take what you've said into consideration and hope to be in touch soon......."
"I am pleased to say that your company is very professional in the field of Insurance.
The customer is happy to get easily connected and then you very patiently explain the difference between various plans to suit each customer's need. "
YES! Canadians CAN purchase US travel insurance policies from us to cover the remainder of their stay (as long as they like). The travel insurance plans that cover COVID have been written not to exclude coverage based on these levels issued by any government authorities.
Note that the policies are generally renewable, so if plans change (as they so often do these days), the policies can be extended (minimum of 5 days and up to 12 months). Policies are available up to $100,000 for persons in their 70s and up to $50,000 for persons in their 80s. You can use our search engine to determine the best prices for you based on age and deductible you'd like.
The deductible on a comprehensive policy is generally a one-time payment if there are any medical expenses (doctor visit, ER visit, medications, etc). A higher deductible will give a lower premium cost, so it is a balance of what you feel you can pay out in the unlikely event you will need medical attention, and how much the policy costs you per month and day.
When you purchase the policy, you will enter your Canadian address as your "home" or "residence" address regardless of whether you own a home in the US or not. The "residence" country and the "destination" country CANNOT be the same. Then, you can choose the start date (even if it says trip start date) as the first day you need the policy. And, even though you choose an "Trip end date" you can always extend most policies without issue (just do not wait until they have expired).
Unfortunately, insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions is very limited on most US visitor policies for foreign visitors. Some policies will cover "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions which should mean life-threatening emergencies due to pre-existing conditions, but they have all recently excluded chronic and congenital disorders from that coverage. As a non-medical person, I'm not sure what illnesses/disorders that leaves that WOULD be covered. The Safe Travels Elite (a fixed plan) and Safe Travels Comprehensive offers some coverage $25,000 or $15,000 for a cardiac issue. The INF Elite and INF Premier travel insurance plans provide coverage for pre-existing conditions up to the limit for pre-ex ailments as indicated in the plan details.
While there will always be some risk involved while traveling and staying in the US, travelers do have travel insurance options for visiting the US. Compare US travel insurance for Canada and buy the plan that best fits your needs.
As ever, we wish you safe and happy travels!
There are more than 35 million annual visitors to Canada either as tourists, students, temporary workers, visitors or businessmen... While US citizens and residents do not need a visa to visit Canada, foreign visitors visiting Canada from many other nations need to apply for a temporary Resident Visa.
Recently a new visa known as Parents and Grand Parents Super Visa has been announced by the Canadian government. This helps Canadian citizens whose parents and grandparents (who are not Canadian citizens) want to visit Canada and stay for up to 2 years without any need to renew the status.
