Visitors medical insurance for older travelers with pre-existing conditions

At American Visitor Insurance we are always striving to get you the best pre-existing conditions coverage options possible for your travels or for your visitors! We recently added a new policy to our line up and we'd like to introduce you to it! We have teamed up with Trawick International to offer a new array of traveler and student plans.

A policy we find quite note-worthy is the Safe Travels USA Comprehensive, which offers best coverage for acute onset pre-existing conditions available for visitors up to 89 years old. This plan is designed for non-US citizens visiting the United States. It covers one sudden and unexpected acute onset of pre-existing condition but only if the traveler receives medical treatment within 24 hours after the first symptom and there has been no change in how the condition was being treated before leaving their home country. The plan comes with the coverage options ranging from $50,000 to $1 million.

medical insurance for seniors

For persons under 70 years of age, the plan covers the acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to the policy’s medical maximum. For those aged 70 to 79, non-cardiac acute onset benefits are limited to $35,000, and for travelers 80 years and older, the benefit is limited to $20,000. In the case of cardiac and stroke-related acute onset incidents, the plan offers up to $25,000 for those under 70, and $15,000 for travelers aged 70 and above.

We are proud and excited to offer this option since we know there are many clients concerned about pre-existing conditions while in the US and we can now offer a significant benefit for this age group (up to age 89). The US is known for it's expensive healthcare system for visitors. The cost of routine physician visit is very expensive in the US.

The common ailments like Diabetes Mellitus with Hyperglycemia admitted to an emergency room would cost around $25000. Stroke resulting in ICU for about 10 days would cost $120000, Heart attack treatment with medical bills for ambulance, hospital emergency room, ICU, EKG and MRI heart scans and continuing care from cardiologists would cost about $20000.

Therefore it is very important to make sure that our US Travel health insurance is taken care of to make us feel safe and secured in a new unknown place. Some visitor insurance plans from INF cover these pre-existing medical ailments. If you have questions or concerns, please contact our friendly agents who can step you through the process and help you find the right plan for you and your visitors!

What are the factors that determine the cost of best insurance for older travelers visiting USA?

When choosing the best insurance for seniors with chronic illnesses in the US, several factors influence the cost of the plan:

  • Age of the traveler: The visitors medical insurance cost increases with the age the traveler. Insurance plans for older travelers above 65 would be more expensive than the younger travelers, with pre-existing conditions.
  • Type of visitor insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance offers exhaustive coverage with higher medical limits are more expensive than fixed benefit travel insurance that are more afforable.
  • Medical maximum coverage and deductible options: Plans with higher coverage limits (e.g., $50,000, $100,000, or $1,000,000) will generally cost more. while higher deductibles lower it — but with more out-of-pocket costs before coverage starts.
  • Destination: The US has expensive healthcare costs in the world, so insurance plans for travel to the US are generally more expensive than those covering other countries like Canada or Europe.
  • Duration of Coverage: The cost of the trip insurance directly depends upon the length of travel.
  • Pre-Existing conditions coverage: Plans that cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions or offer full pre-existing condition coverage (like INF insurance plans) are usually cost higher.

How do fixed benefit and comprehensive visitor insurance offer coverage for seniors with pre-existing conditions?

Comprehensive vs fixed benefit visitor medical insurance for older travelers with health issues.

Feature Fixed Benefit visitors insurance Comprehensive visitors insurance

Pre-existing conditions coverage Not all plans offer coverage. Some offer coverage up to a specified limit Some plans offer coverage, while some others offer coverage only for acute onset of pre-existing conditions

Which pre-existing conditions are covered by US travel insurance?

How does travel insurance for pre-existing conditions work?

The travel health insurance plans which cover pre-existing conditions have clear definitions of what is a pre-existing condition, the look back period for pre-existing condition, whether the travel insurance coverage is limited to acute onset of pre-existing conditions, and if it provides full coverage for pre-existing conditions the coverage limit within the policy for pre-existing conditions. Any travel health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions will depend on all these.

How do I know if my pre-existing condition is covered by travel insurance?

Unfortunately, this simple question has a fairly complicated answer. The answer is: it depends. Firstly, it depends on whether you are a US resident traveling outside the US or a visitor to the US. US residents can purchase trip cancellation insurance that can cover pre-existing conditions and even plans that are travel medical only without cancellation often are more generous in their coverage of pre-existing conditions. These plans may have specific requirements in order to waive the usual exclusion of coverage for pre-existing conditions (like purchase them within a certain number of days of your initial trip deposit or that you have a primary domestic insurance plan in the US), so you should check these details carefully if this is important to you.

Non-US residents or US residents traveling into the US have much more limited options to insure their pre-existing conditions are covered. Some plans offer coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. However, this is misleading, since a careful look at their definition excludes chronic or congenital disorders from such coverage. Chronic illnesses are those that worsen over time and congenital disorders are issues one is born with. They exclude emergencies due to chronic illness because they will say that is not "acute" it is simply a worsening of your condition.

What pre existing conditions are not covered under visitor health insurance?

Even if some visitors insurance covering acute onset of pre-existing conditions for seniors, there are few important exclusions. These plans do not cover:

  • Regular maintenance of an existing condition (eg: daily insulin for diabetes, blood pressure checks, or dialysis)
  • Unexpected or planned care for the existing condition such as scheduled follow ups, procedure or surgery.
  • Regular medication refill costs for chronic illnesses.
  • Preventive care or wellness checkups for the condition.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth if the traveler was already pregnant before start date of the policy.
  • Chronic condition flare-ups that are not sudden or unexpected (e.g., an increase in blood sugar for a diabetic over time)
  • Medical costs after the initial 24 to 48 hours of the acute event, depending on the plan.
  • Conditions diagnosed prior to the look-back period but not disclosed, if the insurer is required to be disclosed.
  • Medical conditions in travelers over the age limit set by the plan (eg: Most of the plans offer coverage for acute onset under the age of 70 years)
