Travel to the US for senior citizens

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic the long awaited reopening of the closed borders to the US is again opening its borders. The US authorities along with the CDC requirements have stated that from November 2021 all international travelers will be allowed to the country but they will have to be fully vaccinated for Covid19 as well as show proof of a negative test for Covid19 test taken 3 days prior to boarding the US flight. . For travelers who are not vaccinated, including U.S citizens and lawful permanent residents need to take Covid19 test 24 hours before the departure date to the US. Travelers need to provide complete contact details of the stay in the US. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the US authorities will accept vaccines approved for emergency Covid use by the World Health Organization.

It is also quite common for travelers above 60 years of age traveling overseas either for a vacation or visiting family members. The International Medical Group (IMG) has some travel insurance plans that has been designed keeping elderly travelers in mind.

60 years and above:

For people who are aged between 60 and 65 years, they can get the maximum benefits of any plan that they wish to buy, as they are well within the age range to be eligible for all the benefits that are not limited due to age.

Patriot America/Patriot Travel plan: This is a comprehensive plan in IMG and is suitable for people traveling out of their home country. This plan is available with the policy maximum option of starting from $50,000 to $100,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000. This plan does not provide coverage of pre-existing conditions.
Patriot America Plus: This is the revised version of the Patriot America plan. For the Non US citizens coming to the US which includes parents or any other visitors, Patriot America Plus would be a good plan to buy. This is a comprehensive plan and it has this special benefit where it covers the acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to age 70 years.

Patriot Platinum: There is another comprehensive plan, which is more expensive when compared to the Patriot America Plus plan. However the Platinum plan it is available with a policy maximum starting from $1,000,000 and goes up to $8,000,000 while the highest policy maximum with the Patriot America Plus plan ends at $500,000 after starting at $50,000. The Patriot Platinum plan covers people above 65 for acute onset of pre-existing condition, for up to $2500 which is not available with the Patriot America Plus plan, and covers up to policy maximum for people below 65. This plan is available for both Non US citizens and US citizens.

Visitors Care: People in this age range can also get something out of fixed plan from IMG which is Visitors Care. It is advisable to choose a comprehensive over fixed due to the nature of the coverage that we get with them. Individuals sometimes prefer this plan while coming to the US as it is economical and covers basic minor expenses without any hassles. This plan covers acute on set of pre-existing coverage up to the plan maximum under 70 years.
Older US citizens have been among the earliest to receive the Covid19 vaccination. This has enabled older US citizens the opportunity to travel in 2021 after being forced to stay within bubble environments for all of 2020. However, given the Covid pandemic, it is very important to buy good travel medical insurance which also covers Covid19 while traveling outside the US. GlobeHopper plan: This is designed for US senior citizens and permanent residents who are above 65 years of age and are qualified for Medicare and are enrolled in Medicare parts A and B. This coverage is available only outside the United States. The single trip plan and is renewable for up to 12 months. This is suitable for travelers who need secondary coverage. There is a multi tri plan that covers travelers who often do multiple trips in a 12 month period. Each trip covered up to 30 days maximum. This plan provides a policy maximum ranging from$50,000 going up to $1,000,000 for this group

70 years and above:

For people in the age of 70 and above, can also buy all the plans listed for 60 and above but the limitations in the benefits are applicable and the price of the plan increases as well. There may be some changes in the policy maximum options as well, for this age range. Patriot America Plus do not cover the acute onset of pre-existing coverage for this group of people. The other Patriot plans have a coverage of $2,500 available for acute onset of pre-existing conditions. The Visitors Care plan provides acute on set of pre-existing coverage up to the plan maximum under 70 years. The brochure of the plans is very helpful to see the details in each and every plan. The Globe Hopper plan provides the same policy maximum for this group as well like it provides for 60 and above.

80 years and above:

For people above 80, the options are the same as for people of age above 70. The policy maximum for people above 80 is reduced to $10,000 with all the plans. Only the Patriot Platinum plan provides a policy maximum of $20,000 for this age group. The GlobeHopper plan provides a policy maximum of $100,000 only for this age group.

At what age does travel insurance become expensive?

Travel insurance starts costing higher with age and is noticeable after the age of 65. Most of the plans start limiting coverage for acute onset of pre-existing condition after this age. Some plans continue to provide good amount of benefits up to age of 79. Very few plans pay flexible benefits up to age 89. However, the policy maximum on the plans get limited to $10,000 or $20,000 with most of the plans. Few of them provide up to $50,000 and very few provide $100,000 as the policy maximum.
