Travel Insurance Advice by Age Group
For our oldest travelers (80+):
Enjoy your golden years by keeping active and visiting other countries! There are different options available for you from several companies.
Fixed benefit options
Fixed benefit options are from Seven Corners in the form of their Inbound USA, Inbound Hospital, and Inbound Guest policies. Inbound USA and Inbound Hospital has a $50k max limit and Inbound Guest has a $40k max limit. Inbound USA and Inbound Guest have a $200 deductible per injury/sickness and Inbound Hospital has a $250 deductible per injury/sickness. Premiums will be $100+ per month with Inbound Hospital being the most economic option. You may choose to increase the maximum limit for the Inbound USA and Inbound Guest plans to $70k and $60k respectively.
Comprehensive options
There are two companies who offer comprehensive coverage to this age group. One is the Diplomat America or Diplomat LongTerm policy underwritten by AIG. The max coverage is for $50,000 with a $250 deductible. Diplomat LongTerm must be purchased for at least 3 months. Premiums will be $500+ per month. Liaison Majestic is the other option and it is offered by Seven Corners. The maximum for this policy is $15,000 and you can choose a deductible from $0 to $2500.

For travelers from 70 to 79 years of age:
Fixed benefit options
Travelers in this age group still have quite a few options available to them. Fixed benefit options are: Immigrant Secure Plan B, Visitor's Care, Inbound USA Plan A/J, Inbound Hospital, and Inbound Guest Plan A/J. Premiums for $50k (some at $40k or $60k) and $200 deductible are around $100 per month. Inbound Hospital has a deductible of $250 and is generally the most economical. A $100 deductible is available on some plans. Visitor's Care is available with a $100,000 maximum which is the highest value available to this age group. If you are interested in lower maximum coverage, Visitor's Care and Immigrant Secure are available at $25,000.
Comprehensive options
Comprehensive policies available are: Atlas America (unfortunately you are not eligible for coverage of acute onset of pre-existing conditions at this age level), Patriot GoTravel, Patriot America, Liaison Continent, Liaison Worldwide, Liaison International, Liaison Majestic, Visit USA Health Care, and Diplomat America. Premiums are around $250 per month. WorldMed and Diplomat America are available at a max of $100k which is the highest value available to this age group. Liaison Majestic offers multiple levels of deductible ranging from $0 to $2500.

For travelers in their sixties:
Fixed benefit options
Travelers aged 60 to 69 years have the same policies available as listed above for travelers in their seventies; however, they are available at a much wider range of options. Maximum coverage can vary from $25,000 to $130,000 and deductibles can range from $0 to $200 for fixed policies.
Comprehensive options
Comprehensive policies can range from $50k to $1 million in maximum coverage and deductibles from $0 to $2500. Premiums for this group with $50k max coverage and $100 deductible (fixed) or $250 deductible (comprehensive) are well below $100 for fixed policies and around $150 for comprehensive policies. Premiums will be greater for greater maximum coverage and lower deductibles.

For travelers aged 50 to 59:
The same full range of options are available for this age group with the same ranges in maximum coverage and deductibles. However, more policies offer $1 million maximum coverage for this age group than the previous group. Comprehensive policies still cost about double that of fixed benefit policies. The range of cost for a $50k max coverage and $100 (fixed) or $250 (comprehensive) deductible is around $50 for a fixed and $100 for a comprehensive policy per month.

For travelers aged 40 to 49:
Travelers in their forties enjoy a full range of fixed and comprehensive policy options. Comprehensive policies can range up to $1 million. The range of cost for a $50k max coverage and $100 (fixed) or $250 (comprehensive) deductible is around $35 for a fixed and $70 for a comprehensive policy per month.

For travelers in their thirties:
Travelers aged 30 to 39 years continue to enjoy a full range of fixed and comprehensive policy options. Comprehensive policies can range up to $1 million. The lowest of cost for a $50k max coverage and $100 (fixed) or $250 (comprehensive) deductible is around $33 for a fixed and $55 for a comprehensive policy per month. At this age range and younger, it may make the most sense economically to choose the comprehensive plan for its better coverage and relatively low cost.

For travelers in their twenties and younger:
At this age group, the comprehensive policies and fixed policies are fairly closely priced, so clients should consider comprehensive plans since they offer much more complete coverage. Don't forget that full time students can qualify for lower cost student insurance products which offer better coverage in many situations and often lower coinsurance rates if the student uses university health center resources.

Other considerations:
Be aware that travelers may often get hazardous sports riders for policies which will cover them should they intend to engage in such activities (please note that otherwise insurance companies will NOT cover accidents incurred while doing these activities). Policies for which such riders may be purchased include Atlas Series products, Liaison Insurance products, and Patriot Insurance products to name a few.
Also, if you are purchasing insurance for two individuals who fall into two different decades, you should consider purchasing separate policies (especially if one is greater than sixty years old). If you purchase one policy, both spouses will be forced to buy a policy with the restrictions of the older person. In that case, it may make more sense to purchase separate policies and give the younger individual better coverage and more options as they might need. Also note that there is really no advantage to having one policy as opposed to two; there is no cost savings in placing two people on one policy (with the exception that minor dependents may be free on certain policies), so you can always purchase two policies in case one person wishes to return home earlier than the other and therefore you can cancel one policy and hold the other until the trip is completed.
