What is the eligibility to buy StudentSecure Budget Insurance
  • Individuals up to the age of 65 years.
  • Individuals must be a full time student at a college or university, excluding online colleges and universities, or within 31 days of being a Full-time Student at a college or university; or must be a Full-time Scholar affiliated with an educational institution and performing work or research for at least 30 hours per week.
  • The Full-time Student/Scholar status requirement is waived for Participants within the US holding a valid F-1 visa including those students on OPT or a J-1 visa. Full-time status requirements remain in force for individuals holding M-1, or other category visas
  • Must be residing outside his or her Home Country for the purpose of pursuing international educational activities
  • Must not have obtained residency status in the Host Country.
  • Participants in the U.S. must hold a valid education related Visa. A copy of the I-20 or DS2019 may be requested.

General definition of pre-existing condition:

"A condition a person has been diagnosed with, is being treated for, or has with reasonable medical certainty before the start of the plan". So a person does not need to know they have the condition for it to be considered pre-existing (a diagnosis is not required).

Acute onset of pre-existing condition*:

Acute onset of a pre-existing condition is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. A pre-existing condition that is chronic or congenital, or that gradually becomes worse over time, is not acute onset of a pre-existing condition.

The Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition benefit will only apply if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. The Acute onset of a Pre-Existing Condition does not directly or indirectly relate to a chronic condition or congenital condition;
  2. Treatment must be obtained within twenty-four (24) hours of the sudden and unexpected outbreak or reoccurrence;
  3. You must be under eighty (80) years of age;
  4. You must not be traveling against or in disregard of the recommendations, established treatment programs, or medical advice of a physician or other healthcare provider;
  5. You must not be traveling with the intent or purpose to seek or obtain treatment for the pre-existing condition;
  6. You must be traveling outside your home country

Most countries require international students to possess a valid student visa. Some visas require proof of insurance that meets specific requirements. StudentSecure meets the insurance requirements of most visas, including the J-1 visa.
As a StudentSecure policyholder, you will have access to a visa letter you can use as proof of coverage. You can download your visa letter through the Member Portal, where you can conveniently manage your policy online.

To Meet Your Study Abroad Program or School Requirements:
Your program or university may require you to have valid student health insurance that meets requirements. Many programs and schools provide their own insurance plans, but oftentimes allow students to purchase alternate coverage that meets requirements.

Inside US:When seeking treatment within the U.S., you may reduce your out-of-pocket costs by visiting a doctor within your preferred provider organization (PPO). PPO is a network of hundreds of thousands of established, highly qualified medical practitioners and well-recognized hospitals in the U.S. Note that you may visit a doctor of your choosing outside the PPO, but billed charges for eligible expenses will not be eligible for a PPO discount.

StudentSecure Insurance Exclusions

Certain types of medical expenses are excluded from coverage under StudentSecure international student insurance. Some exclusions are listed here. Refer to the Description of Coverage for the complete list of exclusions.

  • Pre-existing conditions are excluded during the first six (6) months of coverage under StudentSecure Elite and Select and are excluded during the first twelve (12) months of coverage under StudentSecure Budget. Pre-existing conditions are excluded throughout coverage under StudentSecure Smart, except charges resulting directly from an Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition, an Emergency Medical Evacuation, or Repatriation of Remains.
    • Note: A pre-existing condition is any injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous disorder, condition, or ailment that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or at any time during the 12 months prior to the effective date of this insurance, whether or not previously manifested, symptomatic or known, diagnosed, treated, or disclosed to us prior to the effective date, and including any and all subsequent, chronic or recurring complications or consequences related thereto or resulting or arising therefrom.
  • Immunizations and routine medical examinations, except under StudentSecure Elite as provided for under the Vaccination benefit
  • Routine prenatal care, pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care, unless directly related to a covered pregnancy
  • Medical expenses for injury or illness resulting from participation in specifically excluded extreme sports(see Description of Coverage for full list of excluded sports).
